Unit One - Essay Writing Skills
We will look at the proper way to write an essay by going through the process from the pre-writing stage to the final product. We will explore and experiment with different styles of essays and research methods and focus on important academic concepts like proper formats to avoiding plagiarism. Be prepared to write and re-write several essays!
Unit Two - Short Stories
We will look at different genres of short stories from a selection of cultures and writers. We will discuss and debate issues in the short stories and make relevant connections to other works, our own lives, and the real world. Finally, we will analyze the different parts of a short story, techniques used in writing, and write our own short stories.
Unit Three - Poetry
In this unit we will read and analyze the works of several poets. We will discuss issues like historical meaning vs. intended meaning vs. personal connections, denotative and connotative language and debate many issues that will arise. We will also look at the proper way to read a poem and then write our own poetry.
Unit Four - Shakespeare
We will begin by analyzing the differences between a novel and a play and looking at the various differences in content and structure. We will then continue with an introduction to William Shakespeare (his history, works, and impact) and then go on to read one of his selected plays as a class.
Unit Five - Novel Studies
Silent reading will occur at the start of each class, for twenty minutes each day. You will select the novels, submit the titles, and use the novels for novel study projects to demonstrate your understanding of various aspects of the plot, themes, characters, etc....
Unit Six - Media
We will analyze different techniques used in the media and how to deconstruct ads for meanings and message.

1. Follow all school rules at all times
